immigration museum excursion

On the 12th of October, 15 Year 9 students and DECV staff members attended the Immigration Museum. The excursion was for Year 9 English and corresponded with the reading of Soraya the Storyteller, written by Rosanne Hawke, which is a beautiful and moving story written from the perspective of 12 year old Soraya. It describes her family’s harrowing journey to Australia and being kept in Woomera Detention Centre. Students also explored the history of immigration to Australia and experienced an interview that demonstrated the type of repetitive and probing questions people can endure when they try to enter our country. A great day was had by all, much was learnt and friendships blossomed!
