Year 8 Economics and Business

Overview

We explore the ways in which individuals, families, the community, workers, businesses and governments make decisions in the various markets that make up the Australian economy.

Throughout the semester, we explore the business world through the example of a circus and various circus performers.

What do you do?

Year 8 Economics and Business enables students to understand the process of economic and business decision-making at a personal, local, national and global level and the effect of these decisions on themselves and others, now and in the future.

Students will build up an enterprise portfolio with evidence of a range of entrepreneurial skills and attributes. They will also investigate their neighbourhood economy, explore some entrepreneurial success stories and create a business plan for a small business start-up of their choice.

What skills do you develop?

To prepare them for the future, students will develop a range of enterprise skills and aptitudes. These skills include:

  • decision-making
  • problem-solving
  • leadership
  • communicating and organising
  • working co-operatively
  • managing resources and people.

Students will also gain skills in consumer and financial literacy.

Over the course, students will regularly update their enterprise skills portfolio as they collect evidence of their skills development.
