Curriculum Initiatives

In addition to standard curriculum offerings, the DECV also offers a range of additional courses to meet the individual learning needs of students.

Literacy

The DIY Literacy Modules have been developed by English teachers for students who have been identified as needing extra support with reading and writing. The modules have been written on topics which are considered to be highly engaging for students in Years 7-10.

The modules consist of a magazine style booklet, a workbook and a CD which guides and models reading. Videos and computer games are also used in these modules.

Topics include; Extreme Sports, Animation, Pop Culture and Reality TV. The modules are based at CSF 2 levels 3 and 4.

Connect

Connect is an alternative Year Ten program which is offered to students who for a variety of reasons cannot undertake the full load of Year Ten subjects but who still want to complete Year 10. It consists of English, Maths, Science and World of Work. Students may take on more subjects on an elective basis if they choose.

VCAL

Since 2004 the DECV has offered modules in the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL). VCAL is a hands on senior certificate for students who wish to take a vocational rather than academic pathway. It is an alternative to the VCE which is designed to lead on to tertiary studies.

VCAL students canl undertake studies in a range of strands including Literacy and Numeracy, Work Related Skills, Industry Specific Skills and Personal Development Skills. There are a number of options available in the Industry Specific Skills strand. Individual counselling and advice is essential before undertaking VCAL with the DECV in order to ensure that the course requirements are being met.
